From 23 to 27 October 2006 I attended International Workshop on Nitride Semiconductors in Kyoto with my colleagues (Alberto Basile, Junji Kotani and Masamitsu Kaneko - see Photo 14). Lectures and poster sessions took place in Kyoto International Conference Hall (Photos 1-15) where Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997 and in Ritsumeikan University (Photos 35-40). I met many researchers from Poland, among them professor Sylvester Porowski from Institute of High Pressure Physics (Unipress), Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw known from the growth of high-quality GaN crystals.
On Wednesday 25 October afternoon we went to Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilon Temple). There are Alberto and Junji at the coin-slot machines with random fortunes in Photos 32-33.
Thursday 26 October was a discussion day. The problems, which I was interested in, were discussed in Ritsumeikan University. One of the discussions was presided by my boss Professor Tamotsu Hashizume (in the middle in Photo 40).
In the evening we went to Kiyomizu-dera. It was a very special event because usually the temple is not available for tourists at dusk. We saw the dance of maiko (a girl who is learning to be a geisha, Photo 48), listened to Japaneses monologue (Photo 49), admired the building illumination by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and had dinner.
On Friday 27 October after the conference we were walking in Kyoto. We visited a renovated temple near the main railway station.
On Saturday 28 October we went to Byoodoo-in temple in the city of Uji near Kyoto. The temple image is placed in the obverse of a 10-yen coin. There are many beautiful sculptures of Bodhisattvas and Chinese phoenixes as well as a 3-meter high Budda's monument. On the way from the temple to the railway station one could see the process of tea leaf preparation (Photo 68) and a wide river (Photos 70-72).
During coffee break in the Kyoto Station, we could see a marriage ceremony under the bell of peace.
